Rocky Mountain National Park Timed Entry From Chatfield
Rocky Mountain National Park is a day trip from Chatfield, about 80 miles and roughly 2 hours by car. In summer and early fall you need a timed entry reservation to drive in during the middle of the day. In 2026 that meant 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily from May 22 through October 12, booked only on Recreation.gov for a $2 fee. The park has not announced its 2027 dates yet. Arrive before 9 a.m. or after 2 p.m. and you don't need one.
Timed Entry at a Glance
How Timed Entry Works
Rocky Mountain National Park uses timed entry reservations to spread out summer crowds. You pick a date and a 2-hour arrival window, enter the park during that window, then stay as long as you like. One reservation covers one vehicle and everyone in it for one day. The National Park Service says so on its timed entry page (checked November 2, 2026).
There are two kinds of reservation:
- Timed Entry: the whole park except the Bear Lake Road corridor. Pick this for Trail Ridge Road, Alpine Visitor Center, Wild Basin or the west side.
- Timed Entry + Bear Lake Road: the whole park, including Bear Lake Road (Moraine Park, Sprague Lake, the Park & Ride, Glacier Gorge and Bear Lake).

What About 2027?
As of November 2, 2026, the NPS timed entry page still shows the 2026 season and says nothing about 2027. We won't guess at dates the park hasn't published. Check the NPS page before you plan.
Driving From Chatfield
The drive from Chatfield to the park's Beaver Meadows Entrance near Estes Park is about 80 miles and roughly 2 hours with no traffic (OpenStreetMap routing, checked November 2, 2026). A common route takes C-470 north, then CO-93 through Golden to Boulder, then US-36 through Lyons to Estes Park. Summer traffic into Estes Park and lines at the entrance stations add time. The park warns entrance waits can run 30 minutes or more.
If you're aiming for the no-reservation window, that means leaving Chatfield by about 6:30 a.m. to be through the gate before 9 a.m. Or go later and enter after 2 p.m.
